Can't happen here
by Waldo Kurtz [chief investigative reporter] Los Angeles, California This is the story behind 1 of the greatest manhunts in history. What happened in New York between May 16th and September 28th last year is so incredible that, in a massive effort to protect certain public figures' careers and save NY state's security officials from embarrassment, the facts of this terrifying case have been suppressed. The murder of 1 young woman in a city like New York is unremarkable by itself. But Julie H. (22) was only the 1st victim of perhaps, the most bizarre serial killer that even this land of lunatics has ever spawned. In the weeks and months that followed, a great many other women died suddenly and quietly, yet in highly disturbing circumstances, and they all lost an awful lot of blood... All the victims had the same blood type, but how did the killer know? Human saliva was often found in the women's neck wounds - yet what did it mean? There are a number of well-documented cases of deranged psychopathic murderers who thought they were 'vampires', and acted accordingly. But this case wasn't quite that simple. Coroner's reports became secret documents, coveted by police and the Mayor's office, and withheld from news services - including this reporter. The powers that be stopped talking about the case; officially there was no case. By June 5th, it was said the killer claimed a fresh young victim every night. And from then on, restraining orders were placed on all News agencies, expressly forbidding any mention of... you know what! Still, you cannot stop the people talking, and sales of hammers and tent pegs increased dramatically. Many churches were raided and their crucifixes stolen. The BibleTM hit Times' best-seller lists for 1st time since the Cold War decade, while the clergy found their services heavily oversubscribed. Then came the 1st sighting: "A tall, thin and pale-faced man, with hypnotic red eyes and a strangely compelling voice." In a July raid on the Municipal & General Hospital's blood bank, 3 burly orderlies and a can of mace couldn't stop him. It was much rumoured he was later shot at point blank range by a NYPD patrolman, but those 12-gauge rounds didn't even slow him down. As a reporter, I have seen a lot of weird things, but never anything like this. In 1 encounter (August 17th) with security patrols enforcing the state curfew in the downtown area, the killer was pursued on foot across 5 city blocks, being repeatedly fired upon, repeatedly, to no apparent effect. I know, you see, because I was there... Before sunrise on September 28th, N.Y. Commissioner Robert 'Brooklyn' Allen led a special ops unit of US Green Berets, in a raid on the home of Janus Sikornzy (allegedly a suspect in unsolved murders dating back to the turn of the 19th century), and following a pitched gun battle which took the lives of some dozen soldiers, "shot the occupant dead." That was the official version, anyway. Today, all those top N.Y. city officials responsible for the statement have resigned and disappeared. Yet, a number of grave questions remain unanswered: Army, ever exist? having tested HIV positive back in 1999? hour of discovery, and what happened to their murder case files, reported missing from police HQ? state) be lifted? known only as "Erebus 13", that the US government continues to deny ever existed? know the answer. |
Frozen prisoners thawed
by Mack Remould The trio of hostages (commonly referred to by the media as "the cold 3"), held by an Afro-Arabian terrorist faction - formerly associated with the infamous Dark Jihad group, in cryogenic suspension aboard the privately owned orbital station 'Saddam Hussein', have now finally been released - after 9 long years in subzero, null-grav captivity. It's not yet known if this is a direct result of recent diplomatic efforts, made under the auspices of the newly established, multinational Astro Court, but off-world security forces have expressed great relief that this particular situation has - at long last, been resolved, and without, it appears, anything being gained by the captors. As the former hostages (2 European men and 1 American woman), have in fact, spent a longer period in suspended animation under weightless conditions than any other humans, there is some concern for and interest in the trio's health. Professor Franz Idlesöd (a Noble prize-winner for space tech design work), remarked, "The physical and, of course, mental condition of these people, after all this time, may have an incalculably important bearing upon interstellar missions." He added sincerely, "It could be said these desperately misguided terrorists have done space science a great favour. Ironically, as it is unlikely that the long term cryonic suspension of human subjects would ever have been allowed under purely experimental circumstances, the kidnappers may, albeit inadvertently, have provided medical research with just the sort of bio-data needed to help devise plans for human hibernation during our future journeys to distant stars." |
