Save the talking trees
by Carl Meewezen

Here on the western slopes of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, the JDJ Leverage Corporation initiated their supatree research programme 20 years ago. The mutation of quality-controlled conifers had been attempted several times in the last century, but this groundbreaking GM project was 1 of the first successful widespread applications of "vegenetics."

Giant redwoods have been around since the Jurassic period, and there are a number of 4,000-year-old stumps preserved in the Sequoia National Park, but these supadendrons (of the genus Gigantea), have frequently set new world records for volume growth - and three metres annually is not uncommon. They are extremely hardy, too; not one of the Canadian saplings planted inside the Arctic Circle perished, despite the North American continent's harsh winters of late. Maturing in less than 3 decades, some specimens are now over 100 metres tall.

World-renowned botanist Paddy O'Gellan suggests that the accelerated growth pattern of these supatrees has induced an evolutionary development. In a battery of recent tests, he claims to have discovered a primitive level of consciousness in the local flora, a sort of backwoods intelligence that he's now campaigning to save.

"Their thought processes are extremely slow, indeed," admits O'Gellan. But, he boasts, "With sensitive metering I've detected electrical impulses analogous to binary code." With the felling and logging season upon us, and lumberjacks arriving by the truckload, O'Gellan fears that "new generations of possibly sentient creatures" may be lost when the men with chainsaws start work. Is there a new intelligent species on Earth, and is it endangered?

At stake here is the potential from half-a-million metres of timber per acre yielded by these vast Sequoia forests. As we stand beside the aged Canyon King (a 127-metre pine that dwarfs even the great and ancient 6000-ton General Sherman), there is a sense of being in the presence of some sleeping giant. However, the region's peaceful nature leaves this reporter in doubt that this particular kraken will ever wake.
