click here Star shot under threat by Anthony North
Earth's 1st interstellar flight to Barnard's Star is under serious threat reports ESA Director Hugh Marshall. LIFE, the protest campaign aimed at a guarantee of human rights for the unborn, took out an Interworld Court injunction yesterday, claiming that the proposed star shot would infringe such rights.

Presently stationed were it was built in Earth orbit, the 200-metre ESS Mayflower starship is equipped with a Bussard ramscoop (used to collect hydrogen as fuel on its long journey) and conservative estimates put the cost at nearly 1000 billion euros. Moving at approx 13 percent lightspeed, the Mayflower will take about 200 years to complete its roundtrip, including a century to colonise Vulcan (the only planet of Barnard's Star), shown by advanced infrared telescopic studies to be wholly capable of supporting life. The starship and crew of 30 were due to leave Earth orbit next month, but the legal action taken by LIFE will undoubtedly result in possibly a whole year's delay - if it is permitted to launch at all.

As Mayflower is a generation-starship, the crew of have been specially selected for being (as well as experts in their respective fields) highly fertile and lacking any genetic disorders. The plan is that the crew's offspring will be trained from birth to carry out specialised operational tasks during the mission. But LIFE has taken the view that this constitutes a gross infringement of unborn infants' rights - a total of at least 157 children who will never have the chance for a life on Earth.

you are here Nemesis update
by Richard Bowden
Astronomers have confirmed that the next return of Nemesis, the Solar system's mysterious 10th planet, to within a significant distance of the Sun will occur on schedule, 42 years from now. 65 million years ago, a previous sweep through the Earth's orbit contributed to a crust rupture in what is now the American continent. It is thought now that a small moon from the rogue planet, captured by the Earth's gravitational field, plunged into the Gulf of Mexico at that time precipitating a major extinction event.

Since then its long, erratic journey kept it almost continuously out of observation behind the Sun - an unsuspected, if potentially lethal, distant speck in the sky. Observation last year confirmed the fresh approach of Nemesis and its now characteristic clutch of moons, some of which have an orbital procession as eclectic as their owner, has raised the spectre of a further global catastrophe. The abrupt extinction of the saurian dynasty can be attributed to this fearsome object. Now our own fate, it seems, is in the hands of the gods again.
