Quik-clone crisis
by Mike Hamil City of Angels, Thursday At an interdepartmental teleconference L.A.P.D. Chief Wally Cavanaugh expressed his concern over the recent increase in cloning crimes affecting much of California. Largely responsible for these double troubles are the outlawed "Quik-Clone" labs; mobile, highly organised facilities capable of producing human clones, which grow to maturity in just a few days. These fast-bred adults are cursed with a 7-day lifespan due to their unstable molecular structure, which is an unavoidable side effect of the induced speed growth. But if you're well connected and sufficiently wealthy you can buy an identical twin that's almost impossible to distinguish from "the real thing". That term is used, advisedly, for these carbon copies are by all accounts, emotionally and intellectually subnormal, hence their manufacturers' proscription under UN law since the late 1990s. Useless as workforce except on high-risk jobs (for which they are too difficult to train, anyway), these clones have rapidly become a favoured tool of the underworld, making excellent drones for gangsters wishing to establish a perfect alibi. A typical case is last month's assassination of crime boss Danny "the Pinch" Floyd, Sr. (frequently questioned by LAPD detectives investigating OC cases, but never charged). Reportedly, Floyd was shot dead in a crowded Italian restaurant by Chinese mafia hitman Wong Lo-Chang. But LAPD Chief Cavanaugh discovered to his dismay that Las Vegas sheriff Ike Benson was detaining Wong for petty theft at the time of Floyd Senior's murder. "It was another clone gambit," Cavanaugh told this reporter. "While his doppelganger sat in a police cell, locked up for shoplifting in the next state, we're convinced that Wong was doing the real business downtown. But with his double now released, without being certified as a clone, our proof is gone," he admitted. As it happens, the police claim they have sufficient other evidence on the killer's identity to put him away for good, if he's ever caught in California. Yet, as this reporter was later informed by a high level source in the LAPD: "newcomers to the US of A, especially illegal immigrants, using this method to alibi themselves are making detection of real culprits evermore difficult." According to Justice Department spokesperson Kitty van Buren (42), "New, and fully comprehensive, legislation is needed urgently to make these, erm... 'parents' wholly responsible for the actions of their unstable, asexually produced progeny." But what of the disturbing reports involving stolen human tissue samples being used for purposes of illegal cloning to set-up innocent citizens? Ms van Buren asserts: "The current Eugenics Bill, now being studied by Congress, already covers many such instances for which criminal elements have falsified genetic id evidence, in order to deceive forensic procedures - and penalties are heavy. But, to coin a phrase, the whole body of DNA decoy trickery requires precise rulings be made soon... And, the District Attorney's office will, in fact, bring several test cases to court in the next year." Whatever the outcome of those hearings and trails, we can be sure of 1 thing. This biological anagram spells out anarchic trouble for the future. |
